Supporting America’s
Armed Forces and Their Families
(Will YOU Be One Of One-Hundred?)

On
June 20, 2010 Steve Woodcock will begin a ride
of 12, 818 miles around the perimeter of the United States and to each of the
four corners:
With
the trip originating as a challenge for his 60th birthday, Steve
wanted more out of this epic journey than just an additional 12,818 miles on
his Harley. He has set out to raise $1 for every mile he travels. This volunteer effort will support the USO and
more specifically the USO of San Diego.
Steve holds this organization close to his heart and has volunteered
several times while visiting his daughter Sara, who is the Downtown Center
Director and Director of Programs & Public Affairs for
USO
San Diego has a rich heritage of caring for our nation’s military men and women
in times of war and in times of peace since 1941. Over time, the USO has extended its reach to
include caring for the military families as well. USO
San Diego operates two facilities and is host to the largest population of active duty families in the world. The Downtown and
Neil Ash Airport Centers are open 365 days out of the year and provide a home away from home atmosphere to more
than 150,000 active duty military and their families each year.
“What impressed me the most during our
volunteer service was the major efforts made to assist and support the families
of the men and women who were already deployed.
We all recognize the large traveling shows that somehow miraculously
appear, full of stars near the front lines to entertain the troops. Individually we may recall stopping in a
local USO in the states or abroad to use the computer, phone home, have a bite
to eat, play pool or cards, take a shower or just receive a warm friendly smile
as we arrive in a new place. But we often miss the ongoing, less high profile
work that goes on every day for the families of the deployed. That’s what this trip is about - an
individual’s effort to raise money to continue services of the USO”. ~ Steve’s comments about the purpose of his
cross country adventure. ~
In
addition to being a former lifelong educator and having a passion for riding
his Harley, Steve is also an active member of the American Legion Post 95 and
the New Hampshire Chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders and is also a US Army veteran.
